Benjamin C. Bradlee was born in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1923. After serving in World War II, he earned a degree in journalism from Boston University and went to work for the Boston Post. Over the next decade he worked on newspapers in Richmond, Charlotte, Richmond again, Norfolk again, Providence, Worcester, and finally Washington DC
He joined The Washington Post in 1961 as editor of the Style section where he became embroiled in the Vietnam War and Watergate coverage. He was appointed executive editor of The Washington Post in 1971 and held the job until his retirement in 1991. He is the author of Conversations with Kennedy (University of California Press), which is based on interviews with President Kennedy before his death in November 1963.
